Clear Facts
- House Republicans propose work requirements for Medicaid, potentially affecting at least 3.5 million individuals.
- The proposal aims to save approximately $300 billion over seven years by tightening eligibility standards.
- A majority of Americans, including 47% of Democrats, support implementing work requirements for Medicaid.
House Republicans are pushing forward a proposal that would impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients, a move that could see millions of Americans needing to meet new eligibility criteria or risk losing their coverage.
According to an estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, around 3.5 million individuals could be removed from Medicaid rolls under this proposal. The plan requires able-bodied adults to work, volunteer, or attend school for at least 20 hours a week to qualify for the program.
Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the need for these reforms, stating, “We are protecting Medicaid for the people who need and deserve it.” He highlighted that the program should focus on vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, single mothers, low-income seniors, and the disabled.
Johnson further explained the rationale behind the proposal: “These are reforms to ensure to restore and preserve the system so that it doesn’t collapse on itself.” He pointed out that the changes would prevent illegal aliens from accessing coverage meant for Americans in need and ensure that those who can work are not exploiting the system.
The proposed work requirements would apply to able-bodied, childless adults aged 19 to 64, mandating proof of work, job-seeking, volunteering, or schooling for at least 80 hours a month. This initiative is projected to save about $300 billion over seven years, based on a partial CBO estimate.
Despite the proposal’s delayed implementation until 2029, some lawmakers have criticized the timeline as being too slow. House Energy and Commerce Chairman Brett Guthrie defended the work requirements as “common sense policies that will return taxpayer dollars to middle-class families.”
Guthrie clarified, “Let me be clear – these work requirements would only apply to able-bodied adults without dependents who don’t have a disqualifying condition, encouraging them to re-enter the workforce and regain their independence.”
While House Democrats have opposed the proposal, work requirements enjoy broad support among the American public. A February 2025 poll revealed that over six in ten Americans, including 47% of Democrats, favor such measures.
Support for the requirements rises to 77% when voters are informed that the policy would reserve health insurance for vulnerable groups like seniors, low-income children, and Americans with disabilities.
The CBO’s preliminary estimate indicates that about 7.6 million people could be uninsured by 2034 due to these changes, including 1.4 million illegal immigrants. A White House spokesman stated, “President Trump and Republicans are protecting Medicaid — and that starts with kicking 1.4 million illegal immigrants off the program to prioritize the Americans who need it.”
House Republicans have criticized Democrats for allegedly “fighting to protect Medicaid for able-bodied adults who refuse to work.” When questioned by Republican Texas Rep. August Pfluger about instituting work requirements for Medicaid, Democratic California Rep. Raul Ruiz firmly responded, “no.”

Medicaid, [Obama-insurance] should be strictly limited and each case strictly monitored, NO ILLEGALS, NO SEX-CHANGE TRANSITIONS, legitimate limited procedures and treatments only !!!

Medicaid should be strictly limited to those who really are in need. Those too lazy to work or those who feel that this country owes them a living, should be booted out. I agree with previous writer that sex changes, illegal aliens and other aberrant behavior should not get Medicaid.
