Clear Facts

  • WWE Backlash takes place Saturday at 6 p.m. ET in Tampa, Florida, featuring five matches including two championship bouts
  • Roman Reigns defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu in a family rivalry that has turned personal
  • John Cena is scheduled to make a “history-making” announcement that could reshape WWE’s future

WWE Backlash marks the first premium live event following WrestleMania 42, bringing championship drama and family conflict to the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida, this Saturday night. The event showcases five high-stakes matches with both the World Heavyweight Championship and United States Championship on the line.

John Cena will also deliver what WWE is calling “history-making news” during the broadcast.

Iyo Sky vs. Asuka: Respect and Revenge

The heated rivalry between Iyo Sky and Asuka has intensified since before WrestleMania 42. Asuka has played mind games with Sky for weeks, ultimately interfering in Sky’s Women’s Intercontinental Championship match against Becky Lynch.

Sky lost the title thanks to Asuka’s interference. During a confrontational segment on Monday Night Raw, Asuka escalated the feud by blinding Sky with blue mist.

This match carries enormous potential as both competitors share extensive history from their time wrestling in Japan and as former allies in the Damage CTRL faction, one of WWE’s most dominant female groups before their split.

Prediction: Iyo Sky secures the victory in what should be a standout performance.

United States Championship: Trick Williams vs. Sami Zayn

Trick Williams shocked the wrestling world by defeating Sami Zayn for the United States Championship at WrestleMania 42. Zayn has sought revenge ever since, including a bizarre incident where he dressed as a gingerbread man to attack the new champion.

Zayn gets his rematch at Backlash, driven by frustration over what he views as disrespect to the business. His emotions reached a boiling point during a funeral segment for the gingerbread character on Friday Night SmackDown.

Zayn made clear he has too much respect for professional wrestling to tolerate Williams’ theatrical approach. The champion has earned strong fan support since capturing the title, but Zayn vowed to “disrespect” Williams during their encounter.

The feud took another turn when rapper Lil Yachty emerged from a coffin to strike Zayn with a candy cane, allowing Williams to hit his signature Trick Shot.

Prediction: Sami Zayn reclaims the United States Championship and settles the score with Lil Yachty.

Wildcard prediction: Kevin Owens makes a surprise return to assist Zayn in recapturing the title.

Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker: No Allies, No Backup

This match represents the most compelling storyline heading into Backlash. Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker have been locked in conflict since Breakker cost Rollins a victory over Gunther at WrestleMania 42.

Breakker, returning from injury, devastated Rollins with multiple spears in Las Vegas. Rollins has attempted revenge repeatedly, with both men exchanging physical attacks and verbal confrontations about their positions within WWE.

Breakker has The Vision faction backing him, while Rollins has struggled to find trustworthy allies. The Street Profits—Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins—have focused on Logan Paul and Austin Theory rather than supporting Rollins, and all parties have acknowledged mutual distrust.

The wild card remains Bronson Reed, another Vision member currently sidelined with injury. No official return date has been announced, but his potential appearance in Tampa could shift the match’s outcome.

Prediction: Seth Rollins wins the match, but The Vision faction gains the upper hand afterward.

The Miz and Kit Wilson vs. Danhausen and Mystery Partner

The Miz and Kit Wilson have spent weeks trying to escape Danhausen’s “curse.” Danhausen has tormented both wrestlers since joining WWE, including disruptions at WrestleMania 42.

After The Miz and Wilson brutalized Danhausen in recent weeks, this tag team match was set for Backlash. Danhausen holds singles victories over both opponents.

The main intrigue centers on Danhausen’s tag team partner. He’s been developing a “clone” in his laboratory to even the odds. Speculation has swirled around potential partners including Jelly Roll, John Cena, CM Punk, Stephen A. Smith, and even Shane McMahon.

The only clue came from commentator Michael Cole, who noted that Danhausen’s partner “loves money.”

Prediction: Danhausen wins in entertaining fashion. CM Punk appears as the mystery partner given their shared history, though the choice remains genuinely unpredictable.

John Cena’s Major Announcement

John Cena has teased throughout the week that he will deliver an announcement that will fundamentally alter WWE. The most likely scenario involves the official launch of Club WWE, a subscription service Cena has been promoting in recent advertisements.

Other possibilities that would generate significant buzz include announcing a two-night Royal Rumble, revealing the WrestleMania 44 location, or introducing a new premium live event combining WWE and NXT talent.

Cena serves as host for his second event since concluding his in-ring career. He finished his legendary run in December, losing to Gunther after winning his record-setting 17th WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41.

World Heavyweight Championship: Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu

Roman Reigns’ first Monday Night Raw promo as World Heavyweight Champion was interrupted by Jacob Fatu immediately after WrestleMania 42.

“Fatu declared he wants the championship and everything associated with it because he has a family to feed and money to earn.”

Both Reigns and Fatu descend from the legendary Anoa’i family of Samoan professional wrestlers. Reigns represents the second generation as the son of Sika Anoa’i, while Fatu comes from the third generation as the son of The Tonga Kid and nephew of Haku.

Haku’s signature move, the Tongan death grip—a devastating maneuver targeting the opponent’s throat—has been adopted by Fatu. He used it against Reigns in recent weeks and appears ready to deploy it again at Backlash.

Reigns attempted to avoid the hold during their Monday confrontation. He previously warned Fatu against using the move on family, but Fatu’s determination to win the championship has overridden all other considerations.

This match promises a legitimate big-fight atmosphere when the two family members clash on Saturday.

Prediction: Roman Reigns retains the World Heavyweight Championship.

WWE Backlash airs on ESPN Unlimited at 6 p.m. ET, with the first hour broadcast on ESPN 2.
