A shooting in suburban Maryland early Saturday morning left six people wounded, including two children, as authorities work to piece together what happened during the chaotic incident.
The Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to reports of an “unknown disturbance” at approximately 4:40 a.m. in Hanover, a community located about 15 miles south of Baltimore. When patrol officers arrived on scene, they found a large crowd actively dispersing and discovered one man suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.
Emergency medical services transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
As the morning progressed, the scope of the incident became clearer. Throughout the early hours, detectives were notified by three different area hospitals that additional victims had arrived seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.
The five walk-in victims included a woman shot in an extremity, two boys with lower extremity injuries, and a man and woman both suffering from lower extremity wounds. All victims are expected to survive their injuries, according to authorities.
“Detectives are conducting interviews with the victims to determine what occurred during this event,” the department said.
“This investigation is active and further details will be released once the investigation concludes.”
As of Saturday afternoon, police have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
Hanover is positioned roughly 30 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., in a suburban area between the nation’s capital and Baltimore. The community now joins a growing list of American neighborhoods grappling with gun violence affecting families and children.
