Trump’s Surprising Endorsement Shakes Up Speaker Race

Clear Facts
- Donald Trump has endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson after a period of silence and criticism.
- Trump’s endorsement comes after Johnson faced backlash for not supporting Trump’s debt ceiling goals.
- The upcoming vote on January 3, 2025, is crucial for Johnson to retain his position as Speaker.
In a recent development, former President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana. This endorsement comes after an 11-day period where Trump remained silent, leaving Johnson in a precarious position.
Trump made his support known through a post on Truth Social, where he not only celebrated his electoral success but also criticized the Democrats for what he described as weaponizing the government against him.
In his statement, Trump expressed, “LETS NOT BLOW THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN. The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration.”
He further added, “Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!”
This endorsement is crucial for Johnson, who has been under scrutiny since December 19. On that date, Johnson did not fulfill Trump’s expectations regarding the debt ceiling as part of a government spending deal.
Reports of Trump’s dissatisfaction from Mar-a-Lago, combined with his silence amid rising criticism of Johnson, raised questions about Trump’s support for him.
Despite Trump’s endorsement, challenges remain for Johnson. Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky has openly stated he will not vote for Johnson, and Johnson can afford to lose only one more vote on the House floor to maintain his position.
Moreover, some Republicans have shown discontent with Johnson, especially those who have previously opposed Trump, including on the December 19 vote concerning government funding and the debt ceiling.
Johnson, however, was quick to embrace Trump’s endorsement. He echoed Trump’s sentiments about the importance of starting strong in January.
With the roll call vote scheduled for January 3, 2025, Johnson’s ability to retain his gavel is critical for the House to proceed with certifying the election on January 6.
