  • Rhea Ripley challenged Jade Cargill to a rematch at Clash in Italy for the WWE Women’s Championship

Sami Zayn vs. Cody Rhodes delivered a main event-caliber match on Friday night’s “SmackDown” in Lexington, Kentucky, but the real story unfolded after the bell.

The match stemmed from Zayn’s mounting frustration over what he perceives as unfair treatment. He complained to SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis about not getting enough airtime and feeling pushed to the back of the line.

Rhodes took notice when Zayn called him “golden boy.” The American Nightmare didn’t appreciate the comment, and the match was set.

Rhodes entered with a target on his back, knowing Gunther — his Clash in Italy challenger — could interfere at any moment. Their rivalry has intensified since Paul Heyman fulfilled his favor to Gunther by securing him a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship.

The match itself showcased both competitors’ abilities. Zayn targeted Rhodes’ left knee throughout, working methodically to weaken the champion.

Rhodes fought through the pain, landing a Cody Cutter seemingly out of nowhere. But Zayn wouldn’t stay down, eventually pushing Rhodes onto the announce table.

Rhodes barely beat the 10 count, rushing back at nine. Zayn attempted his signature Helluva Kick and missed.

Rhodes countered with another Cody Cutter, getting a two count. Zayn tried a Blue Thunder Bomb but couldn’t finish Rhodes.

As Rhodes prepared for a Cross Rhodes, Gunther emerged and put him in a sleeperhold outside the referee’s view. Zayn bounced off the rope toward both men, but Rhodes moved and Zayn knocked Gunther to the floor.

Rhodes then hit the distracted Zayn with a Cross Rhodes for the victory.

Gunther returned to the ring and began his assault on Rhodes. Zayn re-entered and stared down the Austrian champion.

What happened next stunned the crowd. Instead of defending Rhodes, Gunther ignored Zayn completely and choked out the champion.

Zayn shook his head, turned his back on Rhodes, and walked away while Gunther continued his attack.

The betrayal raises questions about Zayn’s loyalties heading into major upcoming events.

In other action, Jade Cargill earned her championship rematch. Rhea Ripley opened the show addressing Cargill, Michin and B-Fab after their recent attacks.

“Jade and her crew, they decided to try to send a message. But all they managed to do was really p— me off. So, now that I’m back, I’m itching for a fight. So Jade, if you want your rematch, then I will happily beat you again.”

“You vs. me at Clash in Italy for the WWE Women’s Championship.”

Cargill appeared to accept when she, Michin and B-Fab attacked Ripley and Charlotte Flair after their tag team match against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid. The trio took out Ripley, Flair and Alexa Bliss, sending a message before their six-woman tag team match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Flair and Bliss had joined Ripley during her opening promo, reminding her about their upcoming match and the need to stay focused as a unit.
