Star American Striker Exits World Cup Match After First-Half Injury Scare

Clear Facts
- Christian Pulisic was substituted at halftime during Team USA’s World Cup opener against Paraguay after experiencing calf tightness from a kick
- The AC Milan forward assisted on the United States’ second goal before leaving the match as a precautionary measure
- Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the substitution was preventative, and the U.S. went on to win 4-1
Team USA fans experienced a moment of concern when star forward Christian Pulisic failed to return for the second half of the United States’ World Cup opener against Paraguay. The Hershey, Pennsylvania, native had been one of the team’s most dynamic players in the opening 45 minutes.
Pulisic, who plays club soccer for AC Milan, recorded an assist on the United States’ second goal, scored by Folarin Balogun. His presence on the field was unmistakable throughout the first half.
When the team emerged from the tunnel for the second half, Sebastian Berhalter had taken Pulisic’s place on the field. Berhalter is the son of former USMNT player and coach Gregg Berhalter. The team initially provided no explanation for the substitution.
During the FOX Sports broadcast, reporters noted that Pulisic had signaled to family members in the stands that he was fine. Still, uncertainty lingered throughout the remainder of the match.
After the United States secured a commanding 4-1 victory, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino addressed the situation. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Pochettino explained that Pulisic had taken a kick to the calf that caused some tightness.
“The decision to remove him was purely precautionary,” Pochettino stated.
The concern among American soccer fans is understandable given Pulisic’s recent injury history. He sat out last summer’s Gold Cup to rest after playing 50 club matches with AC Milan. The demanding schedule had taken its toll.
The following season brought additional setbacks. Pulisic dealt with several injuries throughout the campaign. Most recently, according to ESPN, he missed a match last month because of a lower-back issue.
Pulisic remains an essential component of the USMNT lineup. His absence was noticeable in the second half, even as the team maintained control of the match. American soccer depends heavily on his creativity and finishing ability.
While Coach Pochettino characterized the substitution as purely precautionary, fans will remain anxious until their star forward returns to full health. The road ahead in this World Cup is long, and having Pulisic at peak performance could make the difference between advancing deep into the tournament or falling short of expectations.
