Brunson Powers Through Injury Scare to Lead Knicks Past Spurs in Finals Opener
Clear Facts
- Jalen Brunson scored 30 points despite a first-quarter knee injury scare to lead the New York Knicks to a 105-95 Game 1 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals
- The Knicks have now won 12 consecutive postseason games, tying the 1999 Spurs for second-best playoff winning streak in NBA history
- San Antonio struggled from three-point range, making only 11 of 43 attempts (25.6%) in the losing effort
The NBA Finals opened with championship-caliber basketball Thursday night as the New York Knicks claimed a hard-fought 105-95 road victory over the San Antonio Spurs. The win extends New York’s remarkable playoff winning streak to 12 consecutive games, matching the 1999 Spurs for the second-longest postseason run in league history.
Only the dominant 2017 Warriors team stands ahead with 15 straight playoff victories. The Knicks are now within striking distance of that record.
Game 1 delivered early drama when star guard Jalen Brunson exited in the first quarter with an apparent right knee injury. He was seen grimacing and favoring the leg before heading to the locker room for evaluation.
The injury scare proved short-lived. Brunson returned to the bench after a brief absence and re-entered the game, showing the grit and determination that has defined New York’s improbable championship run.
San Antonio seized momentum coming out of halftime, building a 13-point third-quarter lead. But the veteran Knicks squad never panicked, methodically chipping away at the deficit while their young opponents showed signs of Finals inexperience.
Brunson absorbed punishment throughout the contest, including a collision with teammate Luke Kornet that briefly tweaked his ankle. Each time, the Knicks’ floor general bounced back, ultimately seizing control in the fourth quarter when championship games are decided.
“Wasn’t really my night most of the night. But we just kept chipping away. Kept finding a way,” Brunson said after his 30-point performance.
When asked about the comeback from a double-digit deficit, Brunson credited team chemistry.
“Our chemistry, knowing that we have each other’s backs,” he explained.
Regarding his physical condition after taking multiple hard hits, Brunson was characteristically brief.
“I’ll be alright,” he said.
The Spurs’ game plan centered heavily on three-point shooting, a questionable strategy given their roster includes 7-foot-4 phenomenon Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio attempted 43 shots from beyond the arc but connected on just 11, a dismal 25.6% that ultimately sealed their fate.
Wembanyama provided his typical defensive presence in the paint and led San Antonio with 26 points. However, the young star couldn’t single-handedly overcome his team’s shooting woes and New York’s playoff experience.
The Knicks received crucial contributions beyond Brunson’s heroics. Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby combined for 35 points, providing the secondary scoring punch championship teams require.
New York’s bench depth proved decisive. José Alvarado stepped up during Brunson’s absence, keeping the Knicks competitive in critical minutes. Landry Shamet added 13 points off the bench, while Miles McBride contributed seven points in just 11 minutes of floor time.
The Spurs needed more from De’Aaron Fox, who managed just seven points in an underwhelming Finals debut. San Antonio’s young roster appeared overwhelmed by the championship stage, a stark contrast to New York’s battle-tested veterans.
The Knicks now hold a 1-0 series lead heading into Game 2. For a franchise that hasn’t reached the Finals since 1999, stealing Game 1 on the road represents a massive psychological advantage over the inexperienced Spurs.
New York’s winning formula remains simple: elite guard play from Brunson, balanced scoring from the supporting cast, and championship-level composure in pressure situations. That formula delivered again Thursday night in San Antonio.
The Knicks are three wins away from their first championship since 1973. If Game 1 is any indication, this veteran squad has the mental toughness and talent to finish the job.
