Adam Kinzinger says he “would love” to run against Trump in 2024 GOP primary

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he “would love” to run against former President Donald Trump in 2024.
  • Even if he’d be ‘crushed’ in the race, Kinzinger said, “To be able to stand up and call out the garbage is just a necessary thing.”
  • The congressman confirmed he is retiring and not planning a 2024 bid.

In an interview with the Huffington Post published Monday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he would love to run against former President Donald Trump in 2024.

“I would love it. I really would,” he told the media outlet. “Even if he crushed me, like in a primary, to be able to stand up and call out the garbage is just a necessary thing, regardless of who it is.”

Trump, who often teases his own reelection bid in 2024, remains popular with the Republican party based on recent polls. Kinzinger would surely face a steep uphill battle in a GOP presidential primary.

For the Illinois Republican, a potential primary battle would be “fun.”

Kinzinger has earlier announced his retirement from Congress this year. He’s been serving since 2011.

“It’s truly not anything I’m planning right now, but I’m not going to rule it out,” Kinzinger told the Huffington Post. “Look, if we’re in a position, if it’s just terrible candidates and the country’s in a worse place? Maybe. But there’s no grand plan right now.”

He told CNN in November that he’s “definitely” not ruling out a 2024 White House bid.

The GOP has censured him and Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming for being members of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 US Capitol attack.

Kinzinger has also been criticized for breaking ranks with the GOP on several issues in the last year and a half. He voted to impeach Trump for incitement of an insurrection, voting to pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill, and voting to hold several Republicans in criminal contempt of Congress.

“I think mentally I feel more like an independent than a Republican,” Kinzinger told the Huffington Post, adding that he could possibly identify as “some kind of a moderate Democrat” if the party were not as progressive.

“In essence, I guess I’m still comfortable holding the Republican label for now,” he added. “Because as much as people love it or hate it, the Republican Party is going to be around for a while, and it deserves to have a battle for who it is.”

After being labeled as one of the most prominent anti-Trump Republicans in Congress, Kinzinger said he’s had to “ghost” several relationships he’d had with fellow GOP lawmakers.

“It’s like how you stop dating somebody without breaking up with them,” he said. “You do a week between dates and then three weeks. It’s like slow ghosting. It’s the same in Congress. I just sort of ghost having friendships.”

One of the most aggravating aspects of politics is the number of people who, baselessly, believe that they embody the combination of essential factors to propel them to victory in presidential primaries, nomination process and election. Either they are poor judges of popular perceptions or they have an unrealistic sense of the effect of liberal compromise which is, fundamentally, a violation of principle, and they believe that compromise creates a greater, universal appeal than strict adherence to the purpose for law and the benefit of obedience to it. Those whose infamy was gained by betrayal of due process of law with respect to election should consider that they have little or no chance, at all, of making it through the primaries. The embarrassment of rejection should be a lesson informing their arrogance. The most egregious aspect, however, is the money that is, literally, wasted because of the failure to assess one’s appeal realistically.

It is creeps like him who show there should be no parties. Running for office should never be about party, although that is the prime factor. If one serves in public office, their goal should be for their constituents. For the People.

If the system can ever be repaired, there needs to be only ONE party, For America. No party registration. Candidates must know and understand the Constitution. In fact, voters must know the Constitution as well.

That snot-nosed kid is poster child for term limits. Even his tenure is too long. The only correct move he made is to retire. In fact, he should get out now.

Adam Kinzinger has proved he is a spoiled brat and not a responsible representative of the Republican party.
If he is retiring from Congress, why doesn’t he just go home and be quite. He and Liz Cheney, et al.

he’s just another in a long string of communist, leftist RINO’s. This is why I’m really cringing and holding my nose everytime I vote. Seems
most of these “republican” candidates turn out to be TURNCOATS to the Constitution and the American people!!

Call out the garbage? Does he believe the ridiculous lies that the Democrats and the media have been spouting for 5 years now?
Somebody should let him know that those were all lies made up by deceptive operative in the Democratic Party designed to fool gullible people.
