A resurfaced clip from a 1988 interview featuring Shirley Temple on CNN’s “Larry King Live” has reignited discussions about the dark underbelly of Hollywood. In this interview, Temple bravely recounted a disturbing encounter she had at the age of 12 with a producer at MGM.

During the interview, Temple detailed how she and her mother were separated upon arriving at MGM. She was taken into the office of Arthur Freed, whom she initially believed to be a producer.

“I thought he was a producer, but instead he was an exhibitor. And I’d never seen anyone naked before, except myself, so I had no clue about what was happening,” Temple shared.

The situation took an unexpected turn when Freed exposed himself to her. Temple, in her innocence, found the situation amusing and laughed.

“So, it struck me so funny. I laughed at him, and I laughed uproariously, I had tears, you know. And he got infuriated, he said, ‘Out! Out! Out! Go!’” she recalled.

Temple’s mother also had a troubling experience that day. After leaving Louis B. Mayer’s office, she and Temple walked silently to their car, an unusual occurrence.

“We got in the car, driving home I said, ‘Mom, you won’t believe what happened to me.’ And I told her what happened and she got kind of quiet and she said, ‘Well, you don’t know what happened to me,’” Temple recounted.

This shared experience led them to conclude that they preferred working at Fox over MGM. Temple also included details of her encounter with Arthur Freed in her autobiography, further cementing the troubling narrative of her time at MGM.
