In a development that underscores the complexity of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russian forces have reportedly captured a British national, James Scott Rhys Anderson, who was fighting alongside Ukrainian troops. According to the Russian state news agency Tass, Anderson was detained in the partially occupied Kursk region of Russia.

Anderson, identified as a former signalman in the British army, had joined the International Legion of Ukraine, a unit formed to recruit foreign volunteers in the fight against Russia. In a video released by Tass, Anderson expressed his unwillingness to be in the region, stating in English, “I don’t want to be here.”

The UK Embassy in Moscow has acknowledged the situation, stating that they are “supporting the family of a British man following reports of his detention.” However, they have not provided further details. The Russian Defense Ministry has also remained silent on the matter, not responding to requests for comment.

Anderson’s father, Scott Anderson, revealed that his son’s Ukrainian commander had informed him about the capture. He expressed deep concern for his son’s safety, saying, “I’m hoping he’ll be used as a bargaining chip, but my son told me they torture their prisoners and I’m so frightened he’ll be tortured.”

The International Legion for Defense of Ukraine was established at the behest of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The Legion is part of Ukraine’s Ground Forces and consists largely of foreign volunteers. Initially, over 20,000 individuals from 52 countries reportedly joined Ukraine’s ranks to counter Russian aggression, though current numbers remain classified.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to escalate, with Russian forces launching drone attacks on various Ukrainian cities. In Zaporizhzhia, dozens of Iranian-made Shahed drones caused significant damage, injuring a 13-year-old and damaging residential houses. In Kyiv, debris from intercepted drones fell in the Darnytskyi district, although no injuries were reported.

In the Mykolaiv region, drones targeted energy infrastructure, leading to temporary power outages. Fortunately, power has been restored to most areas, and no casualties were reported. Additionally, an attack on Kharkiv injured at least 19 people, as a modified S-400 missile struck a residential area, causing fires and destruction.
