Kentucky’s Democratic Governor Andy Beshear is calling on Senator Mitch McConnell to publicly demonstrate his fitness to serve or step down from his Senate seat. The demand comes after the 84-year-old senator was discharged from hospital care this week but remains in a rehabilitation facility.

In a direct letter to the senior senator, Beshear wrote: “I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.”

McConnell’s office announced Monday that while he had been released from the hospital, he has not received medical clearance to leave the rehabilitation facility where he continues receiving physical therapy. The senator will miss both a major Kentucky political event and upcoming Senate votes.

“I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders. Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky, this Saturday … As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon,” McConnell said in a statement.

The senator was hospitalized on June 14 following a fall at his home. His office later provided additional details about his ongoing recovery process.

“Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office,” the Attending Physician’s office said in a statement.

This is not the first time Beshear has pressed for information. Earlier this month, the governor urged McConnell to release more health information after weeks without public comments from the senator.

Beshear also sent a separate letter Tuesday to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, calling on him to investigate McConnell’s condition if the senator does not provide proof of his capability to continue serving.

“All of this speculation and even this letter could have been avoided with a minimal amount of transparency,” Beshear wrote to Thune.

McConnell’s office has issued two major updates since his hospitalization—on July 12 and July 27—each accompanied by a photograph of the senator.

The situation highlights broader questions about transparency and accountability when elected officials face health challenges. McConnell has served Kentucky in the Senate since 1985 and previously held the position of Senate Majority Leader.

Former Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away in 2023 after serving while facing questions about her health and cognitive ability. The issue of age and fitness for office has become a recurring theme in national political discourse, affecting officials from both parties.
