Clear Facts
- Hollywood stars, such as Lisa Kudrow and Ryan Gosling, have unexpectedly been dismissed from significant roles in popular TV shows and films.
- These actors were replaced for a variety of reasons that include creative disagreements and health issues.
- Despite these setbacks, many of these celebrities went on to land other iconic roles, showcasing the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Dismissals and replacements are part and parcel of the acting profession. Some of the biggest names in the industry, including Lisa Kudrow and Ryan Gosling, have experienced this first-hand. This article explores the unexpected reasons why these celebrities were let go from their roles.
Lisa Kudrow, who famously played Phoebe Buffay on “Friends,” disclosed in an interview that she was initially chosen to play Roz Doyle on “Frasier,” but was dismissed prior to the pilot episode. Kudrow was replaced by Peri Gilpin due to the director James Burrows’ decision that she wasn’t the right fit for the part. Despite this setback, Kudrow swiftly rebounded with her iconic role in “Friends.”
Maura Tierney, recognized for her role as Abby Lockhart in “ER,” was scheduled to portray Sarah in “Parenthood.” Unfortunately, due to a conflict between the show’s production schedule and her breast cancer treatment, Tierney had to relinquish the role. Lauren Graham, formerly from “Gilmore Girls,” took over the role and played Sarah for six seasons.
Initially, John Posey was cast as Danny Tanner on “Full House.” However, when Bob Saget became available, Posey was promptly dismissed.
Alex Borstein was originally supposed to star in “Gilmore Girls” as Sookie St. James. Due to her contractual obligations with MAD TV, Borstein had to step aside, opening the door for Melissa McCarthy to take on the role.
In a surprising turn of events, Amanda Walsh was first selected to play Penny in “The Big Bang Theory.” The character was later reimagined, leading to Kaley Cuoco stepping into the role.
Ryan Gosling was candid about his dismissal from “The Lovely Bones”, where he was replaced by Mark Wahlberg. Gosling had gained 60 pounds for his role, but his vision for the character did not match that of the production’s.
Lastly, Eric Stoltz was initially cast as Marty McFly in “Back to the Future.” Michael J. Fox eventually took over the role after Stoltz was let go due to his dramatic interpretation of the character, which didn’t meet the comedic requirement of the role.
These examples highlight that the world of Hollywood is as unpredictable as it is glamorous, with even the most recognizable names experiencing rejections and setbacks.

so how much did the actor/actress receive once they were dismissed. I can’t believe they weren’t compensated by some amount.
