WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • In her interview with ABC News, Wanda Cooper-Jones said she could not take to watch the video footage of the deadly incident shooting involving her son, Ahmaud Arbery.
  • Former police officer Gregory McMichael and his son Travis, the killers of the victim, thought that Arbery was a burglar since there was a series of break-ins in the area during that period.
  • The video footage sparked outrage and calls for immediate arrest of the suspects as Cooper-Jones believed they haven’t been charged yet for their crime.

Wanda Cooper-Jones, the mother of Ahmaud Arbery — a 25-year-old black jogger who was killed by two white men — said that she couldn’t take to watch the recent video footage showing the deadly incident.

In her interview with ABC News on Thursday, Cooper-Jones said. “I don’t think I’ll ever be in a mental state where I can actually watch the video. I had others that watched it that shared what they saw and that just was enough.”

The passing of her son has brought outrage and racist accusations since no arrests have happened almost three months after the killing.

This week, the video of the incident was posted on social media. The victim’s family believed however that authorities had already watched it in the past.

The graphic video shows Arbery was jogging through a neighborhood in the coastal city of Brunswich in broad daylight, with a pick-up truck following him. The ones in the truck were believed to be former police officer Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis.

After Travis flashed a rifle towards Arbery, they’ve gone scuffling and gunshots were fired. The victim was fatally shot thrice, and later died at a hospital.

The 64-year-old former cop and his 34-year old son said they thought Arbery was a burglar since there had been a series of break-ins in the residence during that period.

A special prosecutor already called for grand jury to investigate the case, but a date has yet to be set. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation would also conduct its own investigation.

In his interview with ABC News’ “Good Morning America,” Cooper-Jones believed that officials still haven’t filed any charges as Gregory McMichael was well-connected in the local law enforcement community.

“I think that they don’t feel like he was wrong because he was one of them,” she said.

Cooper-Jones described her son as a “kind and well-mannered” young man. “Ahmaud, most of all, was loved by his family and peers… Ahmaud didn’t deserve to go the way that he went,” the mother said.

The video was clear according to former Vice President Joe Biden. “Ahmaud Arbery was killed in cold blood,” he tweeted on Tuesday. “My heart goes out to his family, who deserve justice and deserve it now. It is time for a swift, full, and transparent investigation into his murder.”

The video footage instigated calls for the father and son to be charged immediately.
