WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former President Donald Trump led the latest CPAC straw poll for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination with 70 percent.
  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in at far second with 21 percent.
  • Almost nine out of 10 poll participants gave Trump an approval rating during his White House tenure.

During the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) gathering in Texas over the weekend, former President Donald Trump garnered a landslide victory at the 2024 Republican presidential nomination poll.

According to the results announced by CPAC on Sunday afternoon, the former president gained over 70 percent of the nomination votes in the anonymous straw poll.

“I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your incredible support,” Trump said during an address at the event following the poll.

In far second, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis followed at 21 percent. All else gained one percent and below.

In another poll without Trump’s name on the ballot, DeSantis significantly leads the poll with 68 percent, distantly followed by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at five percent. Donald Trump Jr. and Sen. Ted Cruz (TX.) were tied at four percent, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem with three percent. All else fell less than two percent.

The latest conservative straw poll results came amid Trump’s hint of running for White House reelection. Being the biggest and most sought gathering among conservatives, CPAC had become a Trump-led organization since his first presidential bid in 2016.

Attendees of the event were about 1,525 individuals. About 88 percent of them claimed that Trump had done a great job during his administration while another 10 percent said that it was “somewhat approving.”

The attendees had anonymously answered the poll through an online app bearing 20 questions. Some of the topics included in the poll were border security, cancel culture and critical race theory, among others. The presidential poll obviously came out as the highest sought-after topic.

Per event organizers, the CPAC poll aimed at knowing the pulse of the conservative movement on a variety of socio-political issues.
