Trump says he is to send several hundreds of federal law enforcers to Chicago

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that we would deploy federal law enforcement agents to Chicago to deal with the mounting violence in the city. The move was the most recent the President did to Democratic-headed cities that he said was in disarray.

During a White House gathering, Trump said the Department of Justice would instantly install federal law enforcement by the hundreds from agencies such as ATF, FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, and U.S. Marshals Service to quash violent crimes.

Trump added that other cities such as Albuquerque, New Mexico, will soon be deployed with federal officers.

Recently, Trump has been called out for assigning federal officers into cities, starting with  Washington, D.C., to Portland, Oregon, without coordinating with the local government. Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum from Oregon filed charges against the Department of Homeland Security on Friday following the deployment of federal officers to Portland.

The agents were allegedly there to subdue protests for Black Lives Matter initiative.

On Tuesday, a cluster of key-city mayors also called for congress leaders to probe the President’s utilization of federal forces in their cities.

During the gathering on Wednesday, Trump reminded the public that peace and order in every city is the responsibility of its elected officials, and Americans must hold their local leaders accountable for non-performance of duty.

On a press briefing, Trump noted that the cities involved are all lead by Democrats, adding that the federal law enforcers must come in whenever necessary. 

The White House’s initiative to suppress the violent crimes in cities, called Operation Legend, has agents arranged to Kansas City, Missouri.

The city’s mayor, Quinton Lucas, told Chuck Todd during an NBC News interview on MSNBC that the agents were ordered to be at the locality to provide probing support in addressing murder cases.

Violence linked with guns has spiked in the U.S. around the summer, with communities of color most affected amidst facing the COVID-19 outbreak as well.

Chicago faced a significant increase in shooting incidences, especially in the city’s communities, who are mostly brown and Black.  On Tuesday alone, Fifteen people were injured on shootings at a funeral home in Chicago.

As a response, Mayor Lori Lightfoot expressed support on Tuesday with federal agents’ deployment to assist in addressing the latest violence. She warned the Trump administration, though, that she wouldn’t allow any abuse of authority.

On Tuesday, the mayor told the Chicago Tribune that she sent Trump a letter to highlight the points where they can work together about the federal enforcers.

Mayor Lightfoot said on Wednesday that she had a short and honest conversation with the President.
