The Biden administration has determined all current and future U.S. assistance to Somalia will be stopped by May after authorities there destroyed a warehouse containing aid food donated by Americans.

This drastic action came after Somali authorities demolished the World Food Programme’s emergency food storage at Mogadishu Port without informing donor nations.

“At the direction of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Federal Government of Somalia, authorities demolished the WFP Emergency Response Warehouse with no prior notification or coordination with international donor countries, including the United States,” the U.S. Embassy in Somalia stated.

The destruction resulted in the loss of thousands of meals, with the food reportedly ruined beyond recovery and further aid shipments redirected to new locations.

The U.S. Embassy called on leadership in Washington to suspend or permanently cancel financial help unless Somalia returns or compensates for the missing resources.

Somali officials claimed the food was simply moved and not destroyed, but the World Food Programme confirmed the supplies were likely spoiled by improper handling.

Corruption concerns have dogged Somalia’s foreign aid system; one parliament member said in a letter to U.S. officials that relief funds are “captured and monetized by a single-family network and its clan affiliates.”

He described how food and funds from donors—including the U.S.—are often diverted for private gain, and said that staged photo-ops deceive international donors while aid is resold in local markets.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and his extended family are beneficiaries of a system that has systematically looted U.S.-funded humanitarian assistance,” the Somali parliamentarian wrote.

Instances of inflated invoices, relatives receiving high government salaries, and falsified aid distribution have also been documented.

The port where the food was stored is managed by a Turkish company, and Somali officials reportedly act in the interest of foreign operators rather than their own people.

Americans provided aid under programs meant to feed the hungry and support disaster victims, but rampant fraud has led to the end of direct U.S. assistance going forward.
