Semi-automatic firearms, which fire one round per trigger pull, represent the vast majority of modern firearms owned by law-abiding Americans. Fully automatic weapons, which continue firing as long as the trigger is held, have been heavily regulated since 1934 and effectively banned from civilian ownership since 1986.

Gun rights advocates have expressed alarm that legislators would vote to ban firearms they apparently don’t comprehend.
