Washington Could Get a Monumental Arch by 2028

The structure would rise on the Virginia side of the Potomac River and is being pitched as a major national symbol.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the project would stand as a testament to the American dream.
“Great nations build beautiful structures and works of art that cultivate national pride and love of country,” Burgum stated.
The project is currently aimed for completion by July 2028, with the National Park Service overseeing construction and maintenance.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the monument would be a fitting commemoration of the nation’s history.
“Long after everyone in this room is gone, our children and grandchildren will remain inspired by this national Monument,” Leavitt said.
Chairman Rodney Mims Cook Jr. said the arch carries personal and historical meaning for the president.
“The binding of the wound of this nation, that bridge and keeping that connection between those two structures is paramount in what you are doing,” Cook observed.
President Trump said the arch would be unlike anything built before in scale and grandeur.
“We’re gonna have something the likes of which has never been done before,” Trump remarked.
