Poor food quality sickened National Guard troops [Video]

Recently surfaced pictures showed the poor quality of the food provided to the National Guard troops defending the US Capitol. Among their food were undercooked meat, molds, and even pieces of metal.

According to a WXYZ report, the Michigan National Guard has submitted complaints after more than a dozen soldiers fell ill due to eating undercooked meat.

“Yesterday, for instance, there were 74 different meals found with raw beef in them,” a sergeant told the station. “Just yesterday … soldiers had found metal shavings in their food.”

The sergeant added that they have been underfed, with meals being delayed for up to four hours.

Most times, their breakfast consisted of only “a Danish and some sort of juice,” or “a dinner roll and SunnyD,” he said.

Last month, the Detroit News quoted a soldier saying, “Multiple soldiers have been getting sick and vomiting after eating. Morale is very bad; many have served overseas and cannot believe the quality of food they are being fed here.”

The Michigan National Guard stated that it was discussing the “very concerning” and “unacceptable” reports with the contractor in question.

Their statement read, “The health and wellbeing of our Michigan National Guard service members is paramount to their success as they continue to serve in missions in the United States and around the globe.”

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer had reportedly tackled the issue last month, during which she was assured it had been fixed.

A letter signed by all 14 members of the Michigan House delegation on Tuesday stated, “It is completely unacceptable that our men and women serving in Washington, D.C., are being hospitalized due to the food they are being provided.”

The lawmakers asked the National Guard to void the food service contract and find another vendor.

The Michigan National Guard deployed around 1,000 troops to defend the Capitol against feared domestic terrorist plots, making up around 20% of the 5,200 guard soldiers and airmen supporting civilian law enforcement at the Capitol. Their deployment is scheduled to end on March 12.
