  • Texas Longhorns face a critical matchup against Ole Miss this Saturday with their season on the line after two consecutive losses.
  • Head coach Steve Sarkisian has not ruled out benching quarterback Arch Manning amid growing concerns over offensive performance.
  • The program has invested over $40 million in talent this season with hopes of contending for a national championship.

Steve Sarkisian now faces a pivotal decision regarding his starting quarterback as the Longhorns prepare for a must-win contest against Ole Miss. The stakes have risen dramatically after consecutive losses to unranked opponents left the Texas season teetering on the brink.

The Texas offense has struggled to match the lofty expectations set by a roster assembled through massive investment. Sarkisian has publicly stated he needs to see a better version of Arch Manning and several other offensive players this week.

“He’s very comfortable with who he is. He’s not trying to be something that he’s not,” Sarkisian said at SEC Media Days about Manning.

Arch Manning has adopted an aggressive mindset this week, stating his intent to “just let her rip” with the team’s back against the wall. The quarterback insists there is no place he would rather be than in this high-pressure situation.

“I don’t know if we lost him. We created this. We did. All of us. Y’all included. Me. The whole thing, right. Everybody on ESPN, we’ve created this. And so we’ll see what comes out of it,” Sarkisian said about Manning’s persona this week.

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf offered a blunt assessment of Manning’s play this season during an appearance on the Craig Carton show. Leaf described Manning as an average college quarterback who benefits from the exceptional talent surrounding him on the Texas roster.

“I think Texas is a great spot for him because the talent is so rich and they’re going to have a great football team,” Leaf mentioned. But listen, he’s an average college quarterback. Even more so because of how talented his teammates are. It doesn’t mean he’s bad.

“Does he have the DNA to become better and continue to get better? Of course he does. It would such a mistake for someone to draft him high. If another year allows him to get better and improve, then do it…”

Sarkisian has vowed to evaluate everything and has not ruled out making a change at quarterback if the offense fails to improve against Ole Miss. The Longhorns defense, led by Pete Golding, will need to perform at a high level to keep Texas in playoff contention.

The outcome of Saturday’s game will determine whether the Longhorns remain legitimate contenders when the first College Football Playoff rankings are released in the coming weeks.
