Clear Facts

  • President Donald Trump described the U.S. standoff with Iran as a “soft war” during a Monday interview, noting no active fighting has occurred for months.
  • Trump warned that America retains the power to end the conflict immediately and emphasized the U.S. negotiating position remains one of total strength.
  • The Pentagon has reported that the Iran conflict has cost taxpayers more than $47 billion since it began eight months ago.

President Donald Trump told voters the day before the midterms that the ongoing tensions with Iran do not amount to a traditional war.

“We’re not fighting a war … When was the last time we fired anything? This isn’t a war, this is a very soft war,” Trump said on Hannity.

Trump stressed that the United States can bring the situation to a close whenever it chooses.

“This is not much of a war, Sean, because there hasn’t been shooting for months,” he added.

The president’s comments come as voters head to the polls Tuesday amid rising gas prices tied to the eight-month conflict.

Earlier Monday, U.S. forces conducted a limited defensive strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island after Iranian forces fired at an American aircraft.

Officials confirmed the action was not a return to sustained military operations.

Trump said he is in no rush to resume offensive strikes but warned that if the latest talks fail, America will respond decisively.

“With Operation Midnight Hammer, we bombed out all of their potential nuclear power,” Trump stated.

“Now we might have to go after Pickaxe Mountain, but that’s not a big deal. We can do it in literally one hour.”

Trump described Iran’s military capacity as severely degraded, noting its navy, air force, and anti-aircraft systems have been destroyed.

“Their military is gone, their navy is gone, their air force is gone, their anti-aircraft is gone, and they have some missiles, but they don’t have many of them,” he said.

The president dismissed criticism of the war’s cost, calling the more than $47 billion spent “peanuts” compared to the goal of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

“What we’ve done is amazing,” Trump concluded.

Trump maintained that the United States is negotiating from a position of total strength and can end the conflict at any time.
