Mike Pompeo alludes to possible presidential run in 2024
- Mike Pompeo alluded to a presidential campaign while speaking at a fundraising event for veterans on Tuesday.
- He said that he already has teams across several states “to get ready.”
- Pompeo said that if he does decide to run for president, he prays that Americans “will make a good decision.”
Mike Pompeo, who was former Secretary of State under former President Donald Trump, might be planning for a 2024 presidential campaign.
Pompeo declared on Tuesday, “We’ve got a team in Iowa, a team in New Hampshire and South Carolina. And that’s not random. We are doing the things one would do to get ready.”
He made the remarks while speaking at the Navy SEAL Foundation Midwest Evening of Tribute in Chicago. According to Politico, the event raised $6.3 million for veterans and their families.
Pompeo continued, “We are trying to figure out if that is the next place for us to serve. If we conclude [running for president] is, we’ll go make the case to the American people of why that is. And in the end, the American people, I pray, will make a good decision about who’s going to be their next leader.”
Earlier this year, Pompeo talked about his health in an interview with The New York Post. He said that after gaining a lot of weight when he started in public office, he set up a home gym and worked out, losing 90 lbs. in six months.
When asked if the workout was in preparation for a future political run, Pompeo said that he just wanted to have a longer life for his family. He stated, “The truth is, I’m really getting ready for 2044 and hoping I’ll be around in 2054.”
Pompeo, 58, could be facing his former boss in 2024. He served under Trump as appointed director of the CIA from 2017 to 2018 and as secretary of state from 2018 to 2021.
Pompeo even took a swipe at Trump when he joked, “Unlike others, if I go down an escalator, no one will notice.” He was referring to Trump’s ride down the Trump Tower escalator after his presidential campaign announcement in 2015.
During an interview with New York magazine‘s Olivia Nuzzi, Trump, 76, said that he has “already made that decision” regarding another presidential campaign. He said that his next big decision is when he’ll make his announcement — whether it will be before or after midterms.
