Airport Delays Vary Wildly as Funding Fight Grips Travelers

Travelers are facing extreme wait times exceeding six hours at several major airports across the nation. Security lines at some locations remain moving fast while others face total gridlock due to differing staffing models.

The discrepancy is fueled by the partial government shutdown that has left federal TSA employees without pay. Meanwhile, airports utilizing private contractors remain unaffected because their compensation comes from pre-funded federal agreements.

New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong International Airport saw nearly half of its federal agents absent recently. This mass call-out stems from employees being unable to afford basic necessities while waiting for Congress to resolve the budget stalemate.

“This pointless, reckless shutdown of our homeland security workforce has caused more than 400 TSA officers to quit and thousands to call out from work because they are not able to afford gas, childcare, food, or rent,” said Lauren Bis, acting assistant DHS secretary.

Roughly 20 airports currently participate in the Screening Partnership Program, allowing private entities to manage security operations. These screeners must meet all federal standards but are shielded from the financial instability caused by congressional gridlock.

Dr. Evette Richards experienced no delays when flying out of Kansas City, Missouri, which uses contract security teams. She noted the contrast between her smooth experience and the difficulties being reported at federally staffed terminals.

“I walked right in,” she said.

“I believe our airport has contract TSA, so we are not in the long lines and the difficulties other people are experiencing, and hopefully we can get that resolved quickly because all those individuals [federal TSA employees] working without pay is just unbelievable.”

Democrats currently refuse to fund the Department of Homeland Security without placing strict limitations on ICE and Border Patrol. Republicans are pushing for funding without those specific conditions, leaving TSA personnel caught in the middle of the political battle.

President Trump recently deployed ICE agents to fourteen airports to assist with the staffing gaps. He also urged Congress to focus on passing the SAVE Act to ensure only legal citizens participate in American elections.
