According to a report, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday downplayed the Democrat election losses in congress as some party members were considering turning over the leadership to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY).
CNN reported that during an intimate conference call with House Democrats, Pelosi (Calif.) belittled the fact that GOP was able to steal five seats from them.
Rather, the top Democrat legislator reportedly claimed that Election Day was a “big win” as she anticipated the victory of Joe Biden and grabbed at least one seat in the Senate.
“We did not win every battle, but we won the war,” Pelosi said, an anonymous Democrat who attended the call told CNN.
The positive claim comes after a report that some Democrat House lawmakers were dismayed with the Election Day results and are mulling over the replacement of Pelosi with Jeffries. Jeffries is the current chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
According to one of the lawmakers who told The Hill, Jeffries “bridges moderates and progressives better than anyone. And most importantly, he’s not Nancy Pelosi.”
Jeffries, though, said that he was not keen on getting the position, The Hill reported.
During the conference call, Rep. Cheri Bustos (IL.), who led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, reportedly attributed Pelosi’s wrong prediction to faulty polling.
“Voters looked more like 2016 than projected,” Bustos said, a source told CNN.
Democrats, who became disappointed with the voting turnout described Election Day results as “dumpster fire.” They were also wary of their party’s future.
“If we don’t get our act together, we’re going to get creamed in 2022,” a Democratic lawmaker told CNN on Wednesday.
