Federal agents conducted health surveys with families impacted by a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, after President Joe Biden instructed them to go door-to-door, according to a White House official.

The Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention representatives visited approximately 350 households over the weekend and distributed fliers detailing federal resources. The government hopes to reach an additional 50 families on Monday.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s response to the Ohio train crash is being probed by House Republicans, according to sources. Meanwhile, the White House is challenging Republicans to support legislative changes that would toughen fines for safety violations and strengthen hazardous shipment regulations.

Federal officials are monitoring the air and water quality in East Palestine, where 550 homes have been screened so far. President Biden defended his administration’s response to the disaster, noting that federal officials were on the ground within hours of the Feb. 3 derailment of a Norfolk Southern Corp. train carrying toxic chemicals.

“I’m keeping very close tabs on it. We’re doing all we can. The idea that we’re not engaged is just simply not there,” Biden said.

Former President Donald Trump, who has announced his 2024 presidential campaign, visited the town last week and distributed fast food and water. However, Biden has so far opted against visiting the site of the fiery crash and chemical explosion, instead dispatching Cabinet members and emergency response workers.

    Dear East Palestine village leaders,

Yes, the well water is safe …4 NOW! because it will take time for the huge mass of poisons to slowly work down to the level of the town’s drinking water wells. Then the entire area will be poisoned for generations.

To fix this, hundreds of new shallow wells must be drilled around the town to suck out the ground water before the poisons go deeper. Meanwhile all existing village water wells must be shut off so as not to suck the poisons down deeper into the well water table. This has to happen …NOW!

Your poor town will be on bottled water and trucked in water for decades. You must get a Superfund designation to clean it up!
    …………

The Grand Trunk Railroad had a similar problem and solution back in the 1970-80’s in Battle Creek Michigan. I lived there then. Repair yard toxic chemicals in the water table next to the city’s Verona Well Field.
