Planters nuts, a pantry staple, is facing a hiccup. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised concerns about some of its products due to health issues.

Specific batches of the brand’s nuts are being recalled over fears of potential contamination with the harmful bacteria, Listeria.

Hormel Foods Sales, LLC, the company responsible for Planters, voluntarily announced the recall of a “limited number” of two specific products: Honey Roasted Peanuts and Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts.

“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA’s alert stated.

The alert further mentioned that even healthy individuals can contract the illness, showing symptoms such as “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.”

Symptoms may appear within a few hours after consumption, but they could take up to two to three days.

Currently, there have been no reported illnesses connected to these recalled Planters products.

Hormel emphasized in their announcement that, “Our commitment to food safety is our utmost priority. A full investigation is currently in progress to identify the possible source of the contamination.”

The recalled products were manufactured at one of Hormel’s facilities in April. The Honey Roasted Peanuts were sold in 4-ounce packages with a “Best if Used By Date” of April 11, 2025, and a UPC of 2900002097.

Hormel clarified that “No other sizes, varieties, or other packaging configurations of Planters brand products are included in this recall.”

This recall mainly impacts five states as the recalled products were shipped to Dollar Tree distribution warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia, and to Publix distribution warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina.

Hormel assured that “All retailers that received the affected product have been properly notified.”

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are advised to either discard them or return them to the store of purchase for an exchange or full refund.
