Biden lead over Trump shrinks after RNC
- The recent Morning Consult survey has revealed that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s lead over President Donald Trump has significantly narrowed after the Republican National Convention held this week.
- After the RNC convention, the support for Trump among white voters and suburban voters significantly increased.
- Compared to a 52-42 lead on August 23, Biden now has a 50-44 lead over Trump.
The Republican National Convention held this week may have impacted Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s lead over President Donald Trump, according to the recent Morning Consult survey.
The new poll, which was conducted on Friday and released on Saturday, showed that Biden’s lead has narrowed.
Among 4,035 likely voters, about 50 percent supported Biden, 44 percent supported Trump, while the remaining 7 percent were undecided.
The gap between the two presidential candidates has narrowed — Biden had a 52-42 lead in the same poll conducted on August 23, just a day before the Republican Convention kicked off.
The post-RNC poll results offer a contrast to a similar survey conducted after last week’s Democratic National Convention, which showed no significant changes regarding Biden’s lead over Trump.
Other polls still show Biden strongly leading, and the Democratic nominee still has a bigger lead over Trump than Hillary Clinton did after the 2016 conventions.
His lead has been narrowing in recent weeks, however — which may just be what Trump needs in the final sprint to Election Day.
The four-day GOP convention had targeted Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who were referred to as stooges of the Democratic Party’s far left.
The RNC speakers pointed out that the Democrats would only be encouraging violence in the suburbs by supporting the ongoing protests over racial injustice. Trump’s family members, as well as supporters of color, gave speeches that touted the president as an understanding man who is not the racist Democrats say he is.
After the convention, the support for Trump among white voters increased from 2 points to 8 points. Biden’s lead among suburban voters also decreased from 14 points to 8 points. Meanwhile, support for Biden among Black and Hispanic voters further increased.
The new Morning Consult survey reported a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
