Canada loosens travel restrictions for vaccinated citizens coming from US
- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that travel restrictions between Canada and the U.S. are gradually being eased.
- Fully vaccinated citizens and permanent residents of Canada can now travel from the US without being quarantined.
- Still, the prime minister assured that they are monitoring the situation to prevent a spike of COVID-19 cases and a return to further restrictions.
Fully vaccinated citizens and permanent residents of Canada can now travel from the United States without the 14-day quarantine that has been imposed since March 2020. Staying the first three days in a government-approved hotel in the country is also no longer a requirement for eligible air travelers.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed that travel restrictions between Canada and the U.S. will gradually be eased, with plans of a total border reopening to be announced over the next few weeks.
Still, the ban on all non-essential trips between Canada and the U.S., including tourism, will remain in place until at least July 21.
Trudeau announced at a news conference in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, “We’re very hopeful that we’re going to see new steps on reopening announced in the coming weeks.”
He added that they are still making sure “that we’re not seeing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases because nobody wants to go back to further restrictions, after having done so much and sacrificed so much to get to this point.”
Julia Dunn, who is originally from Cape Breton but now resides in Houston, shared, “It’s very freeing being able to get home to family without having to spend those two weeks alone.”
She learned about the restrictions being eased a few weeks ago and knew she had to book her trip to Canada.
The prime minister acknowledged that people are looking forward to the border reopening, but pointed out that “things aren’t normal yet.″
He cautioned, “Nobody wants us to move too fast and have to reimpose restrictions as case numbers rise like we’re seeing elsewhere in the world. We need to do this right.”
