Clear Facts

  • Former Democratic presidential candidate Dean Phillips criticized his party for attacking Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, urging more tolerance for differing perspectives within the party.
  • Fetterman has faced backlash from Democrats over concerns about his mental health, missed committee hearings, and his voting record, which sometimes diverges from party lines.
  • Republicans, including Senators Tom Cotton and Dave McCormick, have defended Fetterman, calling him principled and condemning personal attacks against him.

Dean Phillips, a former Democratic presidential candidate, has taken a bold stance against his own party, calling out Democrats for their treatment of Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman. Phillips expressed his disappointment with the lack of grace shown to Fetterman, who has been under scrutiny for his mental health and occasional deviations from the Democratic party line.

“In this case [Fetterman] suffered a crisis [as] we all know. I think we should cut him some slack,” Phillips stated. He went on to criticize his party for failing to embrace diverse viewpoints, saying, “I’m deeply troubled that my party, the Democratic party, isn’t making more room for people with different perspectives, many of which I share with Senator Fetterman.”

Phillips emphasized the importance of principle over politics, adding, “This is a democracy, we’re supposed to represent everybody. I think both parties should make some accommodations for people that may not see things right down the party line. Americans are sick of politics over principle and I think Senator Fetterman is a man of principle. That’s what should matter. I think we should actually attract more senators like that.”

Fetterman’s voting record has, at times, set him apart from his Democratic colleagues. He was the sole Democrat to vote for the confirmation of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and has taken stances that contrast with his party, such as opposing a government shutdown earlier this year. Additionally, Fetterman co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act, which requires federal authorities to detain illegal immigrants charged with theft-related crimes.

The Pennsylvania senator has also been vocal in his support for Israel, a position that has caused friction with some Democrats following the horrific Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

While Fetterman has faced criticism from within his party, Republican lawmakers have stepped in to defend him. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton described Fetterman as a “decent and genuine guy.” Meanwhile, Republican Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick strongly condemned the attacks against Fetterman, calling them “disgraceful smears.”

“It’s time to put politics aside and stop these vicious, personal attacks against Senator Fetterman, his wife, and his health,” McCormick stated. “While we have many differences, we are both committed to working together to achieve results for the people of Pennsylvania and make their lives better. He is authentic, decent, principled, and a fighter. These disgraceful smears against him are not the John that I know and respect.”

Even some Democrats, such as Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego, have warned that the party’s treatment of Fetterman could backfire. Gallego suggested that Republicans are attempting to “woo” Fetterman and cautioned that alienating colleagues with differing views could lead to electoral losses.

Fetterman’s health remains a topic of concern. After suffering a near-fatal stroke in May 2022, reports have surfaced alleging erratic behavior, missed medical appointments, and a failure to take prescribed medication.

Despite these challenges, Fetterman continues to stand firm on his principles, and voices like Dean Phillips are urging the Democratic Party to reconsider its approach. As Phillips put it, the focus should be on fostering a democracy that represents everyone, even those who don’t always toe the party line.

Typical democrat party thinking. If a member does not toe the “party line”, they must be separated from the herd and replaced at the next primary election.
Pelosi made a living out of browbeating all democrat house members into submission so as to appear “unified”
