Clear Facts

  • Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar withdrew his effort to force a House vote on impeaching President Trump after facing pressure from fellow Democrats.
  • Thanedar initially filed a resolution with seven articles of impeachment but decided not to pursue a vote following discussions with colleagues.
  • House Democrats, including leadership, viewed the impeachment effort as a distraction from their primary legislative goals.

In a surprising turn of events, Democratic Representative Shri Thanedar from Michigan has retracted his attempt to compel a House vote on impeaching President Trump. This decision came after significant pressure from within his own party, highlighting the internal divisions among Democrats regarding the best strategy to oppose the former president.

Thanedar, who is currently facing a primary challenge from the left, had initially filed a privileged resolution that included seven articles of impeachment against Trump. However, after discussions with colleagues, he decided to hold off on forcing a vote.

“[A]fter talking with many colleagues, I have decided not to force a vote on impeachment today,” Thanedar stated on X. He expressed his intention to continue gathering support for his cause, saying, “I will add to my articles of impeachment and continue to rally the support of both Democrats and Republicans to defend the Constitution with me.”

Despite his decision to step back, Thanedar remained firm in his belief that Congress must take a stand. “We’ve got to take a stand,” he said. “As a member of Congress we take hard votes every day. Every day there is a hard vote to take.”

His stance, however, was not well-received by many in his party. House Democratic Conference chair Pete Aguilar criticized the timing of Thanedar’s initiative, emphasizing that the party’s focus should be on more pressing issues like healthcare. “Our focus is on health care being stripped away from the American people,” Aguilar stated. “That is the most urgent and dire thing that we could be talking about this week. Everything else is a distraction.”

Privately, some House Democrats were even more candid in their disapproval. One lawmaker called the impeachment effort “the dumbest thing,” while another dismissed it as “a waste of time.”

Despite the backlash, Thanedar has not ruled out the possibility of revisiting his impeachment resolution in the future. His actions have sparked a debate within the Democratic Party about the best approach to countering Trump, revealing the challenges of maintaining unity in the face of differing priorities.

No legislative goals? Are you kidding….Abortion – sanctuary cities – no drilling(import all foreign oil) – crazy government spending !
Of course, those didn’t work out well for Harris in 2024, but just wait until 2028 for these same “goals” using different titles!
