In a recent appearance on CNN, Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin expressed confidence that a significant number of Republican senators are prepared to halt President Trump’s ambitious budget reconciliation bill. This move comes as a response to concerns over the bill’s spending levels and its impact on the national deficit.

Despite President Trump’s efforts to rally Republican support for his “big, beautiful bill,” skepticism remains among some GOP lawmakers. During an interview, Johnson confidently stated, “I think we have enough to stop the process until the president gets serious about spending reduction and reducing the deficit.”

The bill managed to pass the House by a razor-thin margin, with a vote count of 215-214-1. Notably, Republican Representatives Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson sided with Democrats in opposition, while House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris abstained by voting “present.”

Johnson’s determination to advocate for significant changes to the bill was evident. He highlighted the urgency of addressing the nation’s spending habits, pointing out, “This is our moment. We have witnessed an unprecedented level of increased spending, 58% since 2019, other than World War II. This is our only chance to reset that to a reasonable pre-pandemic level of spending.”

He further criticized the rushed process, arguing that meaningful spending cuts could be achieved without noticeable impact, but only if the necessary time and effort are invested. Johnson elaborated, “But you have to do the work, which takes time, that’s part of the problem here is we’ve rushed this process.”

In previous comments, Johnson criticized the bill’s “unsustainable federal spending” and urged a reconsideration of its provisions. He proposed a strategy to secure spending reductions while maintaining essential funding for border security and defense.

While Senate Majority Leader John Thune remains optimistic about securing the necessary votes by July 4, he acknowledges the challenge of losing no more than three GOP senators. Alongside Johnson, Senators Josh Hawley, John Curtis, Rand Paul, and Kevin Cramer have also voiced concerns over various aspects of the bill.
