  • Sally Field turned down a starring role in the 1996 hit film “The First Wives Club,” which went on to become a box office success
  • The Oscar-winning actress rejected the part because she disagreed with the film’s portrayal of older women focused on dating and relationships
  • The role ultimately went to Diane Keaton, who Field praised as the perfect fit for the character

Two-time Academy Award winner Sally Field is opening up about a major Hollywood role she deliberately passed on — one that became part of cinema history.

In a candid interview with Parade, the acclaimed actress explained her decision to turn down the role of Annie Paradis in “The First Wives Club,” a choice rooted in her principles about how women should be portrayed on screen.

“I loved all those actors. But I did turn it down,” Field explained.

“I have always had a problem with older women either wanting to get a date or looking to, like, you know, have more sex with their husband.”

“I just feel like there’s more for women to say, so that was just never my cup of tea,” she continued.

The 1996 comedy followed three middle-aged women — Annie, Brenda, and Elise — who reunite after a college friend’s suicide. When they discover their friend was abandoned by her husband for a younger woman, they realize they’ve all faced similar betrayals.

The trio then bands together to exact revenge on their ex-husbands. The film ultimately starred Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler in what became iconic roles.

Field shared another practical reason for declining the part: the film’s musical finale didn’t align with her skill set.

“I couldn’t have done that role because I don’t sing, and they all do at the end,” she said.

The veteran actress expressed no regrets about her decision and praised the woman who took her place.

“I would never have been as good,” Field told the outlet. “I mean, it was absolutely right for Keaton—not for me.”

The role Field passed on went to the late Diane Keaton, who brought her signature charm to the character. Keaton passed away on October 11 at age 79 from bacterial pneumonia, leaving behind a legendary Hollywood legacy.
