Democratic Presidential nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden, joined by his wife Jill, visited the Delaware Memorial Bridge Veterans Memorial Park on Monday to commemorate the Memorial Day in the US.
This was Biden’s first public trip ever since shutdowns were made two months ago due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Bidens laid a wreath of white flowers at the memorial. They also briefly talked with the retired adjutant general of the State’s National Guard, and saluted a small group of veterans prior leaving the place based on the press pool report.
“Never forget the sacrifices that these men and women made. Never, ever forget,” Biden told reporters during his visit to honor the fallen military heroes.
The last public event Biden held outside his home was a coronavirus briefing on March 12 with the press at a hotel in Wilmington.
Biden told reporters: “It feels good to be out of my house.”
Trump and his camp has criticized Biden of hiding at his home’s basement in Delaware during the pandemic. In response, the former vice president argued he’s been following health experts’ guidelines by having online campaigns instead, and claimed that he’s winning in his general election faceoff versus Trump.
“We’re on the campaign trail now. Everybody says ‘Biden’s hidin.’ Let me tell you something, we’re doing very well,” Biden said in an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America. “We’re following the guidelines of the medical profession. We’re following the guidelines of the experts, the Dr. Faucis of the world.”
All public events and gatherings have been suspended since restrictions and social distancing measures have been put in place amid the coronavirus outbreak. Face-to-face campaigns such as rallies and town halls were put on hold, and so candidates improvised their interactions with voters and supporters via online campaigns.
In the past three weeks, Trump has made three coronavirus-related official trips to three crucial general election swing states after staying at the White House for one and a half months.
