Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro has expressed readiness for talks with the United States on combating drug trafficking following months of American pressure in the region.
Maduro stated in a recent interview, “The U.S. government knows, because we’ve told many of their spokespeople, that if they want to seriously discuss an agreement to combat drug trafficking, we’re ready.”
He also offered increased U.S. investment in Venezuela’s oil industry, echoing a willingness to engage economically. “If they want oil, Venezuela is ready for U.S. investment, like with Chevron, whenever they want it, wherever they want it and however they want it,” he said.
Despite these overtures, Maduro accused the United States of maneuvering for regime change and access to Venezuelan resources by relying on threats and force.
The U.S. has intensified efforts against drug routes by conducting over 20 strikes against suspected narco boats, resulting in more than 100 deaths in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since September.
One recent operation included a strike on a dock used for drug loading, marking the first known U.S. land strike in Venezuela.
Maduro did not comment directly on this latest military action and said in the interview he would “talk about it in a few days.”
Last month, President Trump declared “a total and complete blockade” on oil tankers linked to Venezuelan sanctions, leading to the seizure of two ships near the country.
Approximately 15,000 U.S. troops were sent to the Caribbean, reinforcing American resolve in the region.
