“If she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro,” Trump said in a phone interview.
Previously, Trump had acknowledged Rodríguez’s signals of possible cooperation with the United States, suggesting she could provisionally guide the country. Rodríguez, however, opposed this narrative and pledged that Venezuela would “never be a colony ever again.”
She declared Venezuela is “ready to defend our natural resources.”
Trump has shifted his stance on foreign intervention, citing the dire situation in Venezuela as justification for American involvement. He noted that rebuilding and regime change efforts are necessary, describing Venezuela as a “failed country.”
“Rebuilding there and regime change, anything you want to call it, is better than what you have right now. Can’t get any worse,” Trump stated. “The country’s gone to hell. It’s a failed country.”
When questioned about differences with Iraq, Trump stated, “I didn’t do Iraq. That was Bush.”
American defense remains a priority for the President, as shown by his renewed interest in Greenland, emphasizing its strategic importance due to Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio advised other nations to observe the outcome in Venezuela, pointing out Trump’s commitment to following through on his statements. “When he tells you that he’s going to do something, when he tells you he’s going to address a problem, he means it,” Rubio said.
