Trump Ends DEI Programs Sparks Swift Policy Shifts
Clear Facts
- President Trump signed an executive order on his first day to eliminate all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices across the federal government.
- Trump declared it official U.S. policy to recognize only two genders: male and female.
- The administration canceled federal DEI contracts, saving $420 million according to Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk.
President Donald Trump acted immediately after his inauguration to dismantle federal DEI efforts, signing sweeping orders to end these programs and reverse Biden-era policies. The closures included withdrawing public resources, canceling pending DEI materials, and placing DEI office employees on paid leave.
The president reinforced traditional gender recognition by officially limiting federal acknowledgment to male and female identities.
The Office of Personnel Management directed all agencies to close their DEI offices, with a deadline enforced by the White House.
Trump also terminated existing and future DEI-oriented contracts, a move Elon Musk said brought significant savings to taxpayers.
An order ended race and sex-based workplace and education preferences, while a memorandum directed the FAA to return to merit-based hiring.
“Illegal and discriminatory diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hiring, including on the basis of race, sex, disability, or any other criteria other than the safety of airline passengers and overall job excellence, competency, and qualification, harms all Americans, who deserve to fly with confidence,” the memo read.
The memo stated: “All so-called DEI initiatives, including all dangerous preferencing policies or practices, shall immediately be rescinded in favor of hiring, promoting, and otherwise treating employees on the basis of individual capability, competence, achievement, and dedication.”
As part of his actions, Trump rescinded Biden’s signature order on advancing racial equity across government and initiated a crackdown on discriminatory policies in K-12 schools tied to federal funding.
The Department of Education warned states to eliminate DEI mandates or risk losing federal support.
This purge extended into the private sector, with leading corporations including McDonald’s, Meta, Walmart, Ford, John Deere, Lowe’s, and Toyota eliminating DEI initiatives.
Events in early 2025 saw companies like UnitedHealth Group, Victoria’s Secret, MLB, and many more scaling back or scrapping DEI efforts, reflecting a broader rollback nationwide.
The National Institutes of Health reversed its Scientific Integrity Policy to end DEI provisions implemented late in Biden’s administration, removing mandates on supporting certain gender identities in research roles.
“The Biden administration weaponized NIH’s scientific integrity policy to inject harmful DEI and gender ideology into research,” said Andrew Nixon, Health and Human Services Department spokesperson. “Rescinding this (scientific integrity) policy will allow NIH to restore science to its golden standard and protect the integrity of science.”
The administration also ended funding for various DEI-related federal grants, including a notable grant focused on “queering the curriculum” for medical professionals treating transgender patients.
Multiple federal agencies dropped contracts with LinkedIn and other entities linked to DEI, further reducing government involvement in these programs.
