NYC Mayor Criticizes Trump’s Maduro Capture Action
Clear Facts
- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called President Trump to voice opposition to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
- President Trump announced their capture following a large-scale military operation targeting suspected drug vessels linked to the Venezuelan regime.
- The Venezuelan government denounced the action, claiming it was an attempt to control their resources and force a regime change.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported on Saturday that he contacted President Donald Trump to oppose the U.S. capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
President Trump stated that the couple was seized during a significant military strike after months of operations targeting alleged drug activities connected to the Venezuelan regime.
The Venezuelan government warned that this operation aimed to seize oil and minerals and force regime change.
A spokesperson from Venezuela described the action as “an attempt to impose a colonial war to destroy the republican form of government and force a ‘regime change,’ in alliance with the fascist oligarchy.”
Mamdani said during a news conference he spoke with President Trump to express his disapproval.
“I called the president and spoke with him directly to register my opposition to this act, and to make clear that it was an opposition based on being opposed to a pursuit of regime change, to the violation of federal international law, and a desire to see that be consistent each and every day,” Mamdani said.
“I registered my opposition, I made it clear, and we left it at that.”
The mayor posted on X that regime change efforts could impact both New Yorkers and Venezuelans in the city, emphasizing the administration will monitor developments and share necessary guidance.
Mamdani and Maduro both support wealth redistribution, though Maduro’s model centered on state control reportedly led to economic instability and authoritarianism.
The mayor’s platform includes expanding public services and city-run programs with increased taxation of the wealthy, reflecting priorities seen in some of Maduro’s policies.
Venezuelan residents celebrated after Trump’s announcement of Maduro’s capture and removal from the country.
