Authorities confirmed two fatalities after an explosion led to a building collapse at a senior living facility in Bristol, Pennsylvania. Nineteen people are still hospitalized, including one in critical condition, following the disaster that struck on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency crews responded quickly to Silver Lake Nursing Home, finding substantial damage that trapped residents inside. Teams from several jurisdictions worked together to rescue those in need, some being removed through doors, windows, and stairwells to safety.
Governor Josh Shapiro highlighted the bravery of the first responders on scene, noting,
“Oftentimes in our communities, we don’t appreciate that type of heroism, and that is what was on display here in Bucks County today.”
Utility company PECO shut off gas and electricity to the building after the explosion to protect responders and residents. The company has not confirmed whether its equipment or natural gas played a role in the incident.
Local residents also assisted emergency crews, reflecting the community spirit. As Governor Shapiro remarked,
“Look, I think this is the Pennsylvania way: neighbors helping neighbors in a moment of need. You saw that here in Bristol. You saw that here in Bucks County. This is how we do this.”
State Rep. Tina Davis expressed her concern, urging people to avoid the area to allow emergency teams to work, saying,
“I am deeply concerned by the reports of an explosion and fire at the Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol Township. My thoughts are with the residents, their families, and the staff during this frightening situation. I am closely monitoring developments and remain in contact with local officials and first responders as they work to ensure everyone’s safety. I urge the public to avoid the area, so emergency crews can do their jobs.”
