Federal agencies took action in Minnesota on Monday after a viral video raised concerns about fraud involving daycare centers. The investigation included Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the presence of federal agents on the ground via a statement on X.
The video in question reportedly showed agents questioning individuals and inspecting various locations, although the exact nature of the businesses was unclear. ICE also posted footage of investigators conducting site visits throughout the area.
“The American people deserve answers on how their taxpayer money is being used and ARRESTS when abuse is found. Under the leadership of @Sec_Noem, DHS is working to deliver results,” the agency wrote.
Independent journalist Nick Shirley released a 42-minute video on Friday documenting visits to numerous Minnesota daycare centers, highlighting facilities that seemed primarily inactive and signs with errors despite receiving millions in state funds.
Shirley described the alleged fraud as so blatant that “a kindergartner could figure out that there is fraud going on.”
Public criticism quickly mounted against state leadership, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, following high-profile figures weighing in on the alleged mismanagement of taxpayer resources.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon called the situation a “breathtaking failure that has happened under the watch” of Governor Walz in a statement reposted by the White House.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “@TheJusticeDept has been investigating this for months. So far, we have charged 98 individuals – 85 of Somali descent – and more than 60 have been found guilty in court. We have more prosecutions coming…BUCKLE UP, LAWMAKERS!”
FBI Director Kash Patel added that additional agents and resources were sent to Minnesota to further the investigation and target large-scale fraud schemes involving federal programs.
