WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • As he participated in the painting of the large “Black Lives Matter” mural on Thursday, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was heckled by some spectators and shouted, “douchebag de Blasio.”
  • De Blasio painted the letter “L” together with Reverend Al Sharpton, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Representative Carolyn Maloney, and his wife Chirlane McCray.
  • In his tweet last June 26th, President Donald Trump criticized de Blasio for commissioning the painting.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was heckled by angry observers on Thursday as he joined in the painting of a huge “Black Lives Matter” mural on Fifth Avenue outside the Trump Tower. Upon de Blasio’s arrival, spectators started chanting, “douchebag de Blasio.”

Around three people shouted “douchebag de Blasio” at Hizzoner when the mayor arrived at about 11:30 am.

Together with his wife Chirlane McCray, Reverend Al Sharpton, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, and Representative Carolyn Maloney, de Blasio painted the letter “L” with yellow color.

“This is such an important moment for our city,” de Blasio, while holding paint rollers, told volunteers, who chanted, “Black lives matter!”

“We are making a statement today of what we value in New York City,” he said.

The mayor stayed in the area for about 20 minutes before leaving.

In between the streets of Fifth Avenue East 56th and East 57th, the entire mural that reads “Black Lives Matter” was painted in huge block letters. It was a collaborative effort of over 20 local artists together with volunteers from Street Corner Resources, a nonprofit organization.

Some passersby shouted at them while working, “Shame on you!,” and another woman yelled, “Hitler told us all lives did not matter, too!”

After hearing that de Blasio had commissioned the painting last month, President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval.

“NYC is cutting Police $’s by ONE BILLION DOLLARS, and yet the @NYCMayor is going to paint a big, expensive, yellow Black Lives Matter sign on Fifth Avenue, denigrating this luxury Avenue,” Trump tweeted on June 26.

As New York continues to struggle with cases of gun violence, a source person lambasted de Blasio last month for trying to wage a war with Trump.

“Obviously he is doing it to antagonize the president,” the source told The Post previously.

“This is what he is concerned about while the city burns. What an amateur politician.”

Despite receiving backlash from Trump and as the city has yet to obtain pandemic assistance from the federal government, de Blasio authorized the painting of the “Black Lives Matter” mural.
