Former President Barack Obama commended his former vice president, Joe Biden, for picking Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his running mate.

Obama declared, “Choosing a vice president is the first important decision a president makes.”

“Joe Biden nailed this decision,” he continued. “By choosing Harris as America’s next vice president, he’s underscored his own judgment and character.”

He added, “Reality shows us that these attributes are not optional in a president. They’re requirements of the job. And now Joe has an ideal partner to help him tackle the very real challenges America faces right now and in the years ahead.”

Biden announced Harris as his VP pick earlier on Tuesday. If Biden were to defeat President Donald Trump in the November election, Harris would the first Black woman to be vice president.

Biden elaborated on his decision by describing his former rival as “smart, tough, and ready to lead.”

He continued to praise her for her public service, including her time spent as California’s attorney general.

Obama also lauded Harris, describing her as “more than prepared for the job.” He added that her story embodies a “fundamentally American perspective,” one that “we can all rally behind right now.”

“This is a good day for our country. Now let’s go win this thing,” the former president concluded.

Harris has served as California’s junior senator since 2017. She then launched her presidential campaign last year. Her campaign ended before the primaries kicked off following low poll results.

Biden had declared back in March that he will have a female VP were he to earn the Democratic nomination. As the presumptive nominee neared a decision, Harris soon emerged as a favorite.

The senator had expressed in April that she would be “honored” to serve as Biden’s vice president.

Harris had said at the time, “I think what’s most important is that we all join together, that we unify the party, that we unify the country and that we elect Joe Biden because Donald Trump does not know how to do the job.”
