Pelosi commends presence of National Guard in DC after repelling troops in BLM protests
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- In a sudden change of tune, House Speaker Pelosi has commended the deployment of National Guards in the capital following a riot that erupted in the area.
- Less than a year ago, Pelosi has lambasted Trump for assigning the National Guard to D.C during the George Floyd protest riots.
- Officials have added more National Guard troopers in Washington, D.C., bringing the total to 25,000 as the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden comes closer.
When it’s about the security of the nation’s capital, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seemed to have a change of stance.
Pelosi thanked the National Guard troops in public for defending “democracy” during last Wednesday’s assault at the Capitol after a group of Trump followers stormed the Congress to oppose the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory.
The House Speaker told a group of troopers
“that the Capitol, our Democracy, our Constitution are safe because of your patriotism,”
only a few months after she called out President Trump for installing troops to D.C. to suppress the violent demonstrations ignited by the killing of George Floyd, a Black man who passed away on May 25 while under arrest by the Minneapolis police.
The detractors of Pelosi swiftly censured her change in tune, citing her presser on June 4th where she raised concerns about the augmented military force and nonexistence of transparency that might escalate the situation.
During the time, Pelosi commented
“By what authority do these National Guard people come in from other states?”
The Democrat leader expressed disgrace at the relaxed appearance of troops posted within the vicinity of the Lincoln Memorial, which had been besieged by thugs early that month.
Pelosi remarked the placement of troops to D.C. signified a moment of sorrow but seemed to have become fond of the thought since.
Last week, Pelosi posted on Twitter her appreciation of the National Guards, saying that amidst the chaos, there are still reasons to be hopeful.
“It was my privilege today to personally thank members of the National Guard who are working protect our nation’s Capitol. Thank you for your commitment to our American democracy, ”
she wrote.
Authorities have increased the number of National Guard troopers assigned in Washington, D.C., to 25,000 following the deadly violence and ongoing threats of national terrorism as the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden comes to a close.
