An international fugitive wanted for leading one of Europe’s most dangerous criminal organizations was taken into custody this week in Dubai. Daniel Kinahan, the 48-year-old alleged mastermind behind the notorious Kinahan cartel, was arrested Wednesday in a covert operation coordinated by Irish and United Arab Emirates law enforcement.

The arrest marks a significant victory in the fight against transnational organized crime. Kinahan is expected to face charges in Ireland related to a brutal gangland war between his cartel and the rival Hutch gang that has claimed 18 lives since 2015.

Dubai police confirmed the operation but did not initially name the suspect, stating they had arrested an Irish fugitive for his alleged role in an organized criminal group involved in international crimes in his home country. Irish media outlets later identified Kinahan on Friday.

Ireland’s national police force, the Garda Síochána, confirmed an Irish man in his 40s was arrested under a warrant from Irish courts.

“An Garda Síochána has been steadfast in our determination that we would pursue those allegedly involved in serious Organized Criminal activity, wherever they go,” the police said in a statement. “Today’s arrest is another extremely important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement co-operation in tackling transnational organized crime.”

Kinahan fled Ireland for Spain before ultimately settling in the UAE. His departure came after he was believed to be the intended target in a 2016 assassination attempt at the Regency Hotel in Dublin during a boxing weigh-in. The attack left David Byrne, an associate of the Kinahan cartel, dead and sparked the violent feud that continues to this day.

The U.S. Treasury Department designated the Kinahan cartel as a significant transnational criminal organization in 2022. They offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of the cartel’s leaders or the organization’s financial destruction—a clear signal of the threat this criminal enterprise poses to international security.

The Kinahan cartel has established itself as a major player in the European drug trade. According to law enforcement sources, the organization has joined forces with other European crime syndicates to form a “super cartel” that controls approximately one-third of Europe’s cocaine trade—a staggering share of the illicit narcotics market.

Beyond his criminal activities, Kinahan maintained ties to the boxing world. He founded MTK Global, a boxing management company, which allowed him to cultivate relationships with legitimate business figures while allegedly running his criminal empire.

This arrest demonstrates the long arm of international law enforcement and the commitment of authorities to pursue criminals regardless of where they attempt to hide. The cooperation between Irish and UAE authorities shows that even wealthy fugitives in distant safe havens are not beyond the reach of justice.
