A violent crime spree across Georgia has raised serious questions about citizenship vetting procedures under the previous administration. The suspect, granted American citizenship just two years ago, had already compiled a troubling criminal record before allegedly killing two innocent victims and critically wounding a third.
Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, was arrested Monday following a series of brutal random attacks in DeKalb County. The UK-born suspect was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2022 during the Biden administration, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Abel now faces two counts of murder, aggravated assault, and multiple weapons charges. Among his victims was Lauren Bullis, 40, who worked in the DHS Office of the Inspector General—the very agency whose parent department had granted Abel citizenship.
Bullis was discovered shot and stabbed to death on Battle Forest Drive while walking her dog. Witnesses reported seeing a man standing over her body before fleeing the scene.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin condemned the attacks and highlighted the failures of the prior administration’s naturalization process.
“Yesterday, a DHS employee, Lauren Bullis, was brutally shot and stabbed to death by Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old, born in the United Kingdom, who was naturalized by the Biden Administration in 2022,” Mullin stated. “Since President Trump took office, USCIS has implemented measures to ensure individuals with criminal histories and who otherwise lack good moral character do not attain citizenship.”
The killing of Bullis was not an isolated incident. Prior to her murder, police found another woman shot multiple times outside a Checkers restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road. She later died from her injuries.
In Brookhaven, a homeless man was ambushed and shot several times while sleeping outside a shopping center on Peachtree Road. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Law enforcement tracked Abel’s silver Volkswagen Jetta using license plate recognition cameras and took him into custody in Troup County.
Abel’s criminal history raises troubling questions about how he qualified for citizenship. Last fall, he was arrested for sexual battery in Chatham County and sentenced to jail time and probation, which included a mandatory mental health evaluation.
Secretary Mullin outlined the suspect’s extensive record in his statement.
“He possesses a prior criminal record that includes convictions for sexual battery, battery against a police officer, obstruction, and assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism and now stands accused of murdering DHS employee Lauren Bullis by shooting and stabbing her while she walked her dog,” Mullin said. “He has also been arrested for the murder of an unidentified woman whom he reportedly shot outside a Checkers, before randomly shooting a homeless man multiple times outside a Kroger in Brookhaven.”
“These acts of pure evil have devastated our Department and my prayers are with the families of the victims,” the secretary added.
The case highlights critical gaps in the previous administration’s immigration and naturalization policies. The current administration has moved to strengthen vetting procedures to prevent individuals with criminal backgrounds from obtaining citizenship.
