According to Stafford Police Chief Jay Wimer, the shooting happened inside the family’s vehicle while they waited in the school drop-off line. The teen and his 35-year-old father had been arguing before the shooting took place.

“The father and son were in an argument. The son pulled out a weapon and shot the father,”

Chief Wimer told reporters during a press conference.

After allegedly shooting his father, the teen exited the vehicle and walked toward the school building. School resource officers and staff members quickly responded, taking the student into custody without incident. No other students or staff members were injured during the event.

The father was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition. Authorities have not released information about the nature or severity of his injuries.

The weapon used in the shooting was recovered at the scene. Investigators are working to determine how the 13-year-old obtained access to the firearm and whether it was legally owned by a family member.
