WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former officials of both the DOJ and FBI have called for the stepping down of William Barr because of his action favoring Michael Flynn.
  • The petitioners accuse the Attorney General of basing his decisions as per Trump’s directive.
  • The group also called out the prosecutor handling Flynn’s case to peruse all the evidence presented by the government thoroughly.

Almost 2,000 former officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and  Justice Department (DOJ) on Monday pushed signed petition lambasting Attorney General William Barr’s move to drop the hearing against Michael Flynn, saying the decision was exceptionally unusual.

The petition also stated that anyone who is not allied with President Trump could face prosecution if they are found lying under oath during the inquiry and fact-finding probing procedures by federal investigators.

The group demanded Barr to quit and urged Congress to formally contempt Barr allegedly because of his continuous disregard on the rule of law by acting in favor of  Trump’s orders instead of working for the public interest.

It was previously reported that Barr instructed federal prosecutors to cease their legal action against Michael Flynn, who was a former national security adviser to the Trump administration’s earlier stages. Flynn then confessed that he did twist some facts to the FBI about his dealings with Russia when a transition transpired with the ambassador of Russia to the U.S.

The petition also pressed Emmet Sullivan,  the judge handling Flynn’s prosecution to review the evidence and statements provided by the government thoroughly.

The group alleged that Barr is abusing the Justice Department by advancing Trump’s evidence which they consider both personal and political, noting that the move has destabilized any assertions to the reverence that courts usually adhere to over the department’s actions should it decide to either prosecute or drop a case.

While the petitioners are comprised of many former political appointees, it also includes ex career attorneys from both Democratic and Republican administrations.

As reported, the most prominent petitioner of the group to date is an attorney general from the Clinton administration, Stuart Gerson. During the first Bush administration, Gerson also headed the Civil Division of the Justice Department.
