Trump makes endorsements in New York’s Democratic primaries
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Former President Trump made surprising endorsements in the Democratic congressional primary races in New York.
- In his Truth Social posts, Trump endorsed Dan Goldman, the lawyer that led his first impeachment, and Rep. Carolyn Maloney in their respective races.
- Both endorsements however were laced with sarcasm.
Former President Donald Trump put out a surprising set of endorsements on Truth Social on Wednesday in which he praised New York Democrats he has previously criticized.
Trump stated that he “Strongly Endorse[d]” Dan Goldman and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, in their respective Democratic congressional primary races that will be held on Aug. 23.
Goldman, the lawyer that led Trump’s first impeachment, is running to represent a district that includes part of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
“I do this not because of the fact that he headed up the Impeachment Committee and lost, but because he was honorable, fair, and highly intelligent. While it was my honor to beat him, and beat him badly, Dan Goldman has a wonderful future ahead,” Trump stated.
Last weekend, Goldman got the endorsement of The New York Times over other candidates, including current Rep. Mondaire Jones. The Times thanked Goldman for “his work on the impeachment trial” and then said that he “already has close working relationships in Washington — an advantage that should help him deliver on the issues most important to New Yorkers, even as a new member of Congress.”
Trump, however, said that Goldman will be “very compassionate and compromising” to Republicans and “will do everything possible to make sure they have a fair chance at winning against the Radical Left Democrats.”
In a statement shared on Twitter, Goldman called Trump’s endorsement “a pathetic attempt at fooling Democrats.”
Trump also endorsed Maloney.
“A vote for Carolyn Maloney in NY-12 is a vote for the future! She is a kind and wonderful person, who has always said terrific things about me, and will support me no matter what I do, just as I supported her very early on. She begged for a check with no quid pro quo, and I gave it to her. In fact, I gave her many,” Trump said.
Trump was referring to donations made in the 1990s and 2000s.
“Those decades-old donations were made and spent at the time to re-elect Democrats, as intended,” Maloney said.
Maloney is running against another sitting member of Congress, Rep. Jerry Nadler due to redistricting.
