A tragic incident unfolded at San Antonio International Airport last Friday night, as a ramp worker tragically lost his life by becoming entrapped in the engine of a taxiing Delta Air Lines plane.
In a statement made by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), they noted that the worker was “ingested” into the engine of a plane that had just arrived from Los Angeles.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed the cause of death as suicide on Monday.
The shocking event raised immediate safety concerns, leading to an initial investigation by the NTSB.
However, in light of the medical examiner’s suicide ruling, the agency has since discontinued its investigation, stating, “There were no operational safety issues with either the airplane or the airport.”
This reassurance is vital for both passengers and airport staff who must carry on with their duties in the wake of such a distressing incident.
Delta Air Lines, the company for which the deceased worker had been a part, has expressed its profound sorrow over the tragic event.
In a public statement, the company acknowledged their heartbreak over the loss of a valued member of their “aviation family.”
The aftermath of such a devastating incident has prompted the deployment of counselors to the airport to assist employees who may be struggling with the distressing news.
The hope is that this support will help those affected navigate the emotional fallout of their coworker’s untimely passing.
This tragedy has cast a stark light on the critical importance of mental health awareness in the workplace, and indeed all aspects of life.
Despite the advancements in destigmatizing mental health issues, suicide remains a serious concern across America.
The event underscores the necessity of ongoing conversations and comprehensive mental health support structures within all areas of employment, from the aviation industry and beyond.
Clear Thoughts
As passengers and staff continue to navigate their way through the San Antonio International Airport, they will undoubtedly do so with heavy hearts, reminded of the silent battles many among us may be fighting.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the worker during this challenging time.

This has a lot of questions left to be asked. Give more information as to why it was ruled suicide. Was there a note, had this person reached out!? I’m not buying suicide just yet. Give me more information.

Agreed. Yet he had to have had emotional issues. I worked on air craft in the Navy and I can tell you the first thing we where taught was do not walk in front of a jet intake or directly behind while it is running. That alone makes me believe he did it on purpose. I do agree there are a lot of questions left unasked and unanswered.
