WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • On Wednesday, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) said that they were considering to change the debate format after the first presidential debate of President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden resulted in disorder.
  • Fox News’ moderator Chris Wallace received backlash for not being able to control the flow of the debate.
  • It is still unclear whether changes will proceed and both parties would agree.

The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) announced on Wednesday that they were planning to change the debate format following the chaotic debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

During their first presidential debate on Tuesday night, Trump repeatedly deviated from the rules which caused the debate more interruptions and lacking in substance.

“Last night’s debate made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues,” the CPD said in a statement, adding that they will “carefully considering the changes that it will adopt and will announce those measures shortly.”

The CPD thanked Fox News’ Chris Wallace for moderating the debate despite getting criticisms for not being able to manage the flow and not controlling Trump for incessant arguing.

“The Commission is grateful to Chris Wallace for the professionalism and skill he brought to last night’s debate and intends to ensure that additional tools to maintain order are in place for the remaining debates,” they said.

Prior to the actual debates, the commission aligns with the presidential candidates to finalize the guidelines of the match. The fact that CPD is planning to change the format is unusual and goes to show how chaotic the first presidential candidate was last Tuesday.

It is still unclear whether the CPD will make changes and both candidates would agree to that.

On October 15, Trump and Biden are scheduled to meet for their second presidential debate, which will be a town hall format in Miami. The third and final debate is scheduled on October 22 in Nashville.

Next Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) are scheduled to meet for their first and only vice presidential debate.
