Authorities in New Jersey arrested 43-year-old Raul Luna-Perez after a fatal car accident that killed a woman and her 11-year-old daughter. ICE confirmed Luna-Perez is an illegal migrant with multiple prior arrests, including two DUIs this year.
The July 26 incident involved Luna-Perez allegedly crossing into oncoming traffic and crashing into another vehicle. The woman driving the Nissan Sentra died at the scene, and her daughter later died at the hospital.
An 11-year-old girl in the back seat of the Sentra survived but is in serious condition. Luna-Perez’s two passengers received minor injuries and were released from a local hospital.
Investigators noted signs of impairment in Luna-Perez at the scene, and a court-authorized blood draw was performed. A detainer from ICE has been lodged, and he is being held pending removal proceedings.
According to federal authorities, sanctuary policies in New Jersey allowed Luna-Perez’s previous release into the community despite his criminal record. “Governor Murphy and his sanctuary policies released this serial criminal into New Jersey communities,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said.
“Now, this innocent family is shattered by their failed leadership.”
“President Trump and Secretary Noem will continue to do everything in their power to remove these criminal illegal aliens before they destroy more lives.”
Governor Murphy’s office responded, with spokesman Mahen Gunaratna stating, “The Governor believes that Mr. Luna-Perez, who has been arrested multiple times for DUI and domestic violence, should not have been allowed behind the wheel and should have already been deported due to his previous dangerous criminal activity.”
